Ugly Sights and Their Success
It seems like everywhere there are successful sites that are unsightly/simple.
To name a few:
So why are these sights so successful?
Why even ask, we all know why we visit these sites, for their content, for they popularity, and their accessibility. Yes, their site design my not be the best, but who really cares what a site design is like when you get a love note on MySpace or a great deal on the sofa you always wanted. After minutes of surfing the net I’m starting to see a trend, simple is successful.
Not everyone is a designer. Sure, some people will think your layout is really good looking, but what about all those people who have to sit and wait for your site to load when all they really want to know is if you have what they are looking for.
So what is simple and pretty?
This is where I believe “web 2.0“ begins to come in. With lots of white space and the use of simple css styles, you create sites with little load time and a focus purely on content. Even the big fonts make reading easier, sure scrolling forever through an article that is only a paragraph long is a little silly, but hey, if it saves readers from getting eye strain then isn’t it worth it.
The simple, yet successful mind frame
Think of users. MySpace’s main page is a jumble of things that people who like MySpace would enjoy. It’s pretty simple, if people want an apple give them an apple.
Well, with that said. I’m off to re-design my site, it’s not simple enough.
Comments
its a matter of opinion
i mean we have our graphic designers that want their stuff i mean having a little patience some times is better for you.
Really I don’t think you should state your opinion like this
myspace and the other sites don’t take long at all to load.
even on dial up.
and for this to be a site
i would think it could look somewhat better.
but hey maybe your not done re-designing it.
I dont think you understood me… Which I guess could be my fault.
MySpace and the places listed are popular and simple. They load fast because they are simple. When people load up they’re myspace profile with gifs and stuff, loading can take forever (and I’m on 512 KB/s).
I’m trying to point out that there are a lot of people on the net who think they know how to design a website just because they know how to create a layout in photoshop. Web design is not graphic design. Good web design is simple, cool color combinations and easy to read, and easy accessibility. graphic design is complex.
And, I havent even started the re-design. haha, this page is complicated, lots of images and stuff…
Good design!
